The RAC audits have been put in place to identify fraud, abuse and improper payments. CMS is looking at implementing RAC for Medicaid claims as well. However, the implementation of the Medicaid program will be quite different, as the Medicare RAC program has the country divided with only 4 approved RAC contractors, whereas each state can contract with one or more contractors for the Medicaid review. Hospital compliance programs will become increasingly more important and diligent with their documentation.
